Istanbul Folklor Merkezi, which is one of the best of its kind, was founded by Cihangir Gozukizil, Tuncay Akar, Z. Abidin Oruc in 1981 in Istanbul.
The ensemble takes its name from the magnificient city of Turkey. Istanbul, with its historical richness and natural beauty, its famous all over the world. It is a city which is always worth to see.
The members of the ensemble are mostly students and they are all ametuers. There are two groups: adults and children, totaly 220 members.
In present traditional Turkish folk culture.Our repertoire contains more than 100 dances.Our performances are 10 minutes up to 120 minutes.
We have also a chorus that sings Turkish traditional folk songs.
So far, Istanbul Folklor Dernegi (IFD) has performed in Turkey and abroad in Holland (1981,1982, 1990,2005), Italy (1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2001), Hungary (1983, 1995, 2000, 2003, 2009), Portugal (1988,2003,2005), USA (1991, 2016), Spain(1984, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001), Czech Republic(1992, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002,2003,2004), Slovakia (1997, 2014), Belgium(1988), Ireland(1989), Finland(1990), France(1994, 1998, 1999, 2011), Romania(1999), South Africa(2000, 2001), Bulgaria(2000, 2013), Greece(2002, 2007), Poland(2002,2006), Makedonia (2009, 2015), Tailand ( 2010), Puerto Rico (2017), Mexico (2018)
